چکیده

Fracture-induced mechanochemical activation is achieved for the first time in a structural engineering polymer. Rubber toughened PMMA is lightly cross-linked (1.0 mol%) with the mechanophore spiropyran by free radical polymerization. Single Edge Notch Tension tests are performed on the spiropyran-linked material and a distinct change in color and fluorescence is detected at the crack tip, indicating the mechanochemical transformation of the spiropyran molecules. The degree of mechanophore activation is quantified via fluorescence imaging and is observed to increase with increasing crack length. The region of mechanophore activation correlates directly with the size of the plastic zone ahead of the crack tip. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Environmental effects on mechanochemical activation of spiropyran in linear PMMA†

Mechanophore-linked linear poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was synthesized using bisfunctionalized spiropyran (SP) as an atom transfer radical polymerization initiator. The resulting polymer had a Tg of 127 C and molecular weight greater than 250 kDa. SP-cleavage experiments confirmed the incorporation of SP molecules approximately into the center of the polymer chain. Force-induced reaction o...

Numerical and Experimental Studies on the Fracture Behavior of Rubber-toughened Epoxy in Bulk Specimen and Laminated Composites

(2002) Numerical and experimental studies on the fracture behavior of rubber-toughened epoxy in bulk specimen and laminated composites. ABSTRACT To study the toughening mechanisms of liquid rubber (LR) and core-shell rubber (CSR) in bulk epoxy and composite laminate, experimental and numerical investigations were carried out on compact tension (CT) and double-cantilever-beam (DCB) specimens und...

Modeling mechanophore activation within a viscous rubbery network

Mechanically induced chemical reactivity is a promising means for designing self-sensing and autonomous materials. Force sensitive chemical groups called mechanophores can be covalently linked into polymers in order to trigger specific chemical reactions upon mechanical loading. A model framework is developed to describe the response of these mechanophores to mechanical loading within an elasto...

Heterodyne force microscopy of PMMA/rubber nanocomposites: nanomapping of viscoelastic response at ultrasonic frequencies

We present measurements of the nanoscale elastic and viscoelastic properties of samples of poly(methylmetacrylate) (PMMA)/rubber nanocomposites. For these studies we have used a new technique based on atomic force microscopy (AFM) with ultrasonic excitation, heterodyne force microscopy (HFM), which provides a means of testing the viscoelastic response of polymeric materials locally (in tip-prob...

Micromechanics of ultra-toughened electrospun PMMA/PEO fibres as revealed by in-situ tensile testing in an electron microscope

A missing cornerstone in the development of tough micro/nano fibre systems is an understanding of the fibre failure mechanisms, which stems from the limitation in observing the fracture of objects with dimensions one hundredth of the width of a hair strand. Tensile testing in the electron microscope is herein adopted to reveal the fracture behaviour of a novel type of toughened electrospun poly...
